Homework: Media Ownership (Due 5/4)

Please read one of the following articles (copies handed out in class if you prefer to read on paper rather than online):
Making Music
Why Media Ownership Matters to Kids
and answer the following questions in a comment:
- List three reasons (in a full sentence) why it is important for people to be able to access t.v., music, etc. made by a variety of different people.
- Does the media do a good job of presenting different types of information or opinions? Why or why not?
- Are there any types of music on the radio, television shows on TV, or magazines in stores that you wish were available but aren’t?
Feel free to respond (respectfully) to other students’ comments and add any opinions or thoughts you have on this topic.

1. if they only get media from one sroce, they only hear one opion
2. i think it used to do well in presenting differnet ideas, but now only a few idaes get through

1. I really have no idea what this means but i will take a guss. So that you can have a verrity of range and option. And because then you dont have to watch or listen to the same thing over and over.
2. I think they try to make everything sound better then it really is.
3. I think alot of things are not available to the public that should be but i do not have a preference.

(1. Three reasons why it is important for people to be able to access media from a variety of sources are that (1. sometimes you can’t listen to or have access to any kinds of things you might want to listen to if you get all your entertainment/information from one media source, (2. You can learn more about different things you might not ever have known about if you hadn’t looked at another media source, and (3. If people just pay attention to one media source they are letting to super company who owns it tell them what to listen to read, and think.
(2. I do not think that the media peresents different types of information and viewpoints very well. I read that in ‘Making Music’ that the songs the mega companies who own all of the radio stations chose to air of the station are purely based apon money. Whatever artist or band they think they will profit the most from they premote to death. I agree with this from listening to my local radio station… there are one or two songs that are played so many times you want to cover your ears ever time you here them! In that sense, (using the music example) viewpoints are not expressed in a very good way because the radio stations are no longer deciding what songs to play… it’s up to the companies who want to make as much money as possible.
(3. There are not that many songs on the radio, T.V. shows or magazines that I wish were available but aren’t. However, there are some songs that I enjoy that aren’t played very much because the station has to make time to play the super money-maker songs over and over again. I wish they could play the less popular songs a little more.

1It’s important becuase people can access media from anywhere and stay updated.
2 The media just presents the fastest information whether its accurate or not.
3 I wish that more political magazines were availble that werent just propaganda.

1. It’s important to have access to media from a verity of sources because different companies may promote it differently or might put a different idea with it. I think kids should be exposed to all of it.
2. If a radio station or TV channel says something a certain way about an idea we hadn’t heard about before, it would be easy for us to believe what we heard and not be able to process our own ideas about it.
3. I‘m signed up for a online music site and sometimes I get annoyed because it doesn’t know about the certain group of songs from the new movie or whatever and I’m not able to get it.

(1) It is important to have access to media from a lot of sources
because there vis different companies that may promote different
stuff, or put different ideas, and children should use them or not to use them.
(2) Sometimes the media does a good job of presenting different types of information because there are certain ways that the information can be spread and not process by the companies own ideas which is unfair.
(3) I wish that the stuff I wanted that was shown on T.V. had to be in stores but wasn’t because the companies are to lazy that they need to pay the T.V., radio, and magazines and not enough to the store whicvh is not cool and I can’t get what I want for a special day.

1 . because you have to have access to media from differant sources because differant companies may do it differantly and put a new idea out. I think that all kids should be exposed to it.
2. the radio station or a t.v station says somthing a certain way about an idea that we hadnt heard before it would be a lot more easy for us hear and to prosess new ideas.
3. i am availble for a web site so they can send me e-mails and magizines but sometimes they dont give them to me and one time they sent me an e-mail and deleated it right away bfore i even had a chnance to read it.

1. This is important because then the people who sing the songs or are on the TV show will be able to get heard or seen by the public, also everyone has a different idea on what things should look like or sound like. This makes hearing or seeing things more interesting.
2. The media does not do a good job of promoting artists because they sign the same kind of people because they cell easier and better then others with a different style. Eventually the mousic becomes boring to listen to.
3. Yes there are some artists i think don’t get their music played often on the radio or dont always make the top 100 on itunes. I think this kinda sucks because they have a real talent but aren’t able to get it known.

1. It’s important to have access to media from a variety of sources because different companies can promote it differently or might put a different idea. I definetly think that kids should be exposed to all that.
2. I think that they do a good job because really anything that’s on the radio or on t.v in a commercial is going to get more business than if they didn’t.
3. I wish that there was a channel that was divoted only to fishing or anything that has to do with fishing.

It is very important to have access to da media from a variaty of places cuz da different companies may promote it differently or might put a different idea with it. I think grapefruits should be exposed to all of it.

1. because if people dont see tv they dont know whats actually going on in the world and if its put out by different stations then they can see the different perspectives of different people.
2. if a radio station or cnn or something like that says something about a topic that will make us think about that and change are perspective.
3. iTunes for example doesnt have some bands that I like and i wish they would have it on there so i could get their songs.

I think that it is impotant 4 people to be able to acess t.v., music … because some might be better than others and you might want a little bit of a change.
The media does a good job of presenting different types of opinions so it coul;d please itz customers
I wish my favorite songs could be available more on the radiopAre there any types of music on the radio and my fav old television shows to be available on tv again, but they are not

(1) 3 reasons it is important for people to have access to t.v. and music made by a variety of people are:
A. So the music changes and doesnt stay the same making it boring.
B.Many musicians can’t get their music heard by people making it very hard to get popular.
C.So kids are exposed to the diversity of ideas that are out there, and that they should grow up around.
(2) I think the way the media presents new kinda of ideas and opinions is good for them but not neccisarily good for us. They can present it in a way that makes it look good or bad, and most likely many of us will believe it, which can be very bad or sometimes good.
(3) Yes, for example on itunes they don’t have all the bands, and some very good bands especially because a huge record company wrote in their contract that they can’t sign with itunes or anyone so the company can make a ton of money since you MUST buy from them to hear the artist.

1 It’s important because compies may cause many different ideasand promote them too.
2 Like when a TV channael said something at a certain way about an thought that we never heard before, we can easily believe to what we hear. It even may not be able to process on are on about are ideas.
3 I would sign up for music on the radio because can it get furious to find a certain you want to hear.

1) It is important for people to have acsess to tv because it is one of the largest scources of information in the world. It also is important because alot of companys promote on tvand if people couldn’t watch tv not as many people would buy things from them and they would go out of buisniess.
2) Media does a great job at advertising because they hire people to make advertise for them and make people want to buy their product.
3) I wish they had more bands on i-tunes.

1.it is important for people to have acsess to tv because t.v is a big part in life and a big source for news and the world It is also important because people promote abc family.
2. Media does a great job at advertising because they hire celberties to advertise for them and make people want to buy their product.

It’s important to use different sources of companies for your media. Each company will have different ideas and thoughts and if you listen to them it will prevent argument and addiction.
If something is said that you don’t know abuot we won’t process the information without oiur own thoughts.
I wish they had better AIM and you could choose vid or chat

It is important to have access to different styes because it lets youlisten to different song or shows. Another reason is thatyou may like many different stlys of shows or songs. It also means that artsist can’t get their ideas out.
I don’t think the media do a good job on presenting different stlys to the world beuce once i heard the same song on 3 staions at the same time this leads me to belive that they do a poor job.
No I don’t have that problem but i do wish that poeple would blast rap in thier cars or didn’t listen to it.

1. it is important to be able to access / discover a variety of music and tv because then you have a diverse way of thinking
2.the only media that projects the truth is underground in my opinion. fox, cnn, msnbc, theyre all what the general publick WANTS to hear and it isnt generally the truth like the whole iraq war marketing. no WMds but they say there were anyway.
3.i wish the radio woul play more indie and local music. also i wish people (as in you and me) could be able to have their own voice or sense of humor projected on telelvision. magazines, the only magazine i would buy that is not common is the magazine called Swindle by shepard fairey. maybe rolling stone and SPIN but magazines arent realy a problem. for me.

1. I think its important to have a tv etc. because that way you would know whats happening around the world

1.) it’s important to have access to media from a verity of sources to me because diffrent companies promote diffrent things and it’s good to spread out and look at everything.
3.) I really don’t care about the music and magazines on the radio and all that because i like all types of music so it really doesn’t bother me.
2.) Smetimes they do a good job of presenting and sometimes they don’t because all the rap songs that i see on tv they may not be on the radio or the video may not be on the tv and the song on the radio so you can’t win or loose.

1) i think it iz important to have access from a veriety of of companies because u would not want to have only one brand of clothes or only t.v channel ect.
2) not really because every body doen’t get a say in the media only the people who r workin on da brand.
3) i wish there was a radio station only for local bands not those famous and important bands or arstists.

1) i think it is important to have access from a variety of companies because if they don’t hear everyones opinion then they vannot have their own opinion and be able to decide what they really think.
2) I think that the media does do a good job of presenting diffrent ideas since they get every opinion out
3) I wish that songs that i like that havent come out on album yet would be out until i get the album
